NIKONOV kit submarine
Assemble the wooden model of the world’s first submarine dating from 1720
Russia, in 1718. Peter I receives a request from a certain Efim Nikonov Prokopyevich, working at the shipyard, who claims to be able to create a ship which, under the water, would approach the underside of enemy ships and shoot them with cannon. The Tsar of Russia, known for being a fan of innovation, approved the idea. The model was created, capable of everything he had promised Nikonov, and in the middle of the year 1720 was declared the first under -sailor in the world.
He It was a wooden barrel 6 by 2 meters, fitted with a snaruzhi pump and a pair of lead plates with many tiny holes in them, responsible for immersion and emersion. The cannons replaced the opening through which the diver had to exit and pierce the bottom of enemy hulls. After 4 years of construction and adaptations, the submarine was launched. Unfortunately, during its dive its structure was damaged and had to be urgently reassembled with the inventor. Peter I ordered to reinforce the structure with iron strapping and to provide the project manager with all the necessary materials. Unfortunately, after the king’s death in 1725, funding for the project ceased. As a result, Prokopyevich Yefim Nikonov is demoted and exiled to the Far Admiralty as an ordinary worker.
